Colorado laws dealing with drunk driving cases are very strict. Moreover, if the arrested person is a member of a law enforcement agency, it is considered a very serious offense. Recently, a veteran police officer from the Denver Police was arrested on charges of DUI.
According to sources, the 44-year-old commander of the police department was arrested by the County Sheriff in connection to a DUI offense and use of a firearm. Blood alcohol tests were conducted on the suspect. According to official records, the policeman's blood alcohol content level was 0.176. According to Colorado law, that is almost double the legally allowed limit. The arrested officer was later released on a $1,000 cash bond.
According to records, this was not the first time that the officer was arrested on a DUI charge. He was arrested for DUI in 2004, but he ended up pleading guilty to a lesser charge. The current charges are pending before the appropriate court. In the meantime, the police department has assigned the suspected officer to a desk job and internal investigations are being conducted in the matter.
A DUI charge may damage the reputation of a person. The damage can be even greater if the arrested person is in a position of power and may further hamper career opportunities. It is very important that anyone charged with a DUI offense is well prepared to defend the charges and safeguard their reputation.
The charged person has the right to defend themselves by questioning the validity of blood alcohol tests, breath tests and other field sobriety tests conducted by authorities. Whether the person agrees to take the tests or they were forcefully administered is also a question that is to be probed during investigations. An experienced attorney may be well equipped to carry out investigations and represent the case before the appropriate authorities. The attorney may also point out the inconsistencies in the prosecution's case that may be instrumental in absolving the suspect of the charges.
